Terrence Haynes was released from prison in June 2019 after serving 20 years for a murder he did not commit. Now, Hale Law Group has filed a wrongful conviction lawsuit on his behalf in U.S. District Court in Urbana naming the Kankakee State’s Attorney Office, the Kankakee County Public Defender’s Office, the city of Kankakee, as well as other parties as defendants.
In 2000, Mr. Haynes was wrongfully convicted of shooting and killing Cezaire Murrell in 1999 and sentenced to 45 years in prison. He was released in June when the Kankakee County State’s Attorney dropped all charges after an investigation.
Attorney Andrew Hale told the Daily Journal, “What happened to Terrence Haynes is such a tragedy that could have easily been avoided. This man lost almost 20 years of his life.”
Among other things, the lawsuit alleges that Mr. Haynes’ constitutional rights were violated. In particular, the prosecution encouraged a key witness to lie to gain the conviction, police fabricated reports and withheld exculpatory evidence, and attorneys for the public defender’s office failed to zealously represent our client. The lawsuit is seeking compensatory damages, punitive damages, attorneys’ fees, costs, and additional relief.
