Hale Law Group is representing Derrick West in a claim alleging that he was brutally beaten by Florida Department of Corrections Officers in 2017. Andy Hale is serving pro hac vice, collaborating with local co-counsel Mary Sherris in Orlando, Florida.

The complaint against the Florida Department of Corrections, and named and unnamed corrections officers, alleges that Mr. West was victimized by unprovoked attacks on October 8, 2016, February 12, 2017 and again on July 6, 2017. The first alleged attack occurred in the Lake Correctional Institution by a correctional officer and the subsequent attacks at the South Florida Reception Center after Mr. West observed corrections officers unreasonably beat another inmate.

Our client sustained numerous injuries in the attack, which occurred while he was handcuffed. Mr. West was subsequently transferred to another facility where he was allegedly subjected to the July attack after complaining about stolen property. The complaint also alleges that the involved corrections officer threatened the life of our client and his family for complaining about the beating.

As a result of the repeated beatings by multiple corrections officers, Mr. West suffered significant physical injuries and emotional distress. The complaint also alleges that his rights under the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Civil Rights Act (Title 42 US Code, Sections 1983 and 1988) were violated. Mr. West is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, attorneys’ fees and any other relief deemed just and appropriate.

This case highlights Hale Law Group’s commitment to provide skilled and competent representation to underserved communities. We have the skills and resources to protect the rights of individuals who have been subjected to excessive and unnecessary force by law enforcement officers and prison guards.
